4 Ways to Nurture Social Selling

Are you shy on social media? Do you hesitate to leave comments or send Direct Messages?

No later than last week, a friend entrepreneur of mine was saying that each time someone leaves a nice comment under her posts, her little inner voice says: what does that person want from me? The same when she wants to leave her message to someone. Her head goes: now this person gonna think I want to sell them something.

Social selling is a misunderstood concept. It’s not about being pushy and trying to sell your product. Social selling is actually all about listening, networking, and building relationships with potential customers on social media platforms like LinkedIn or Twitter. By nurturing these relationships over time you increase the chances of eventually closing the sale.

This blog post will cover four ways for social marketers to nurture their social selling efforts: by staying top-of-mind through consistent updates or showing up, following up after connections have been made, responding promptly when someone reaches out to you for help or information and engaging in conversations.

What is Social Selling?

According to Salesforce, social selling is “the process of building relationships and transactions over social networks through the use of content marketing.”

This definition showcases how social media has evolved from a place for people to share their lives with others, into a key component in generating sales leads.

As more brands are investing time and money into influencers on YouTube or Instagram celebrities who have large followings, it’s important that you know what your company stands for before reaching out.

In this episode of Social Media Love, I’m going to be sharing some thoughts on starting to engage and interact with total strangers on Social Media with the intent of leading into a business conversation. This will help you if you have programs and services that you’re trying to sell.

The term “social selling” has been around for decades, but it’s only just recently become a trend in the social media marketing space. Social selling is when people use social media to connect with their potential customers and provide them with information about their products or services. It can be done through Facebook posts, Twitter chats, Instagram Stories, or even LinkedIn Influencers.

Social sellers are able to leverage the power of social networks like Facebook and Twitter by using these platforms as an extension of their business websites and email newsletters. When they create posts on these sites they’re doing so with the goal of driving traffic back to their website where users will hopefully make a purchase from them either online or in-person.

For me social selling consists of four buckets.

Social Selling Tip #1 – SHOWING UP

Nowadays, when you post beyond publishing your copy and image or video online, there are a few ways to increase the chances of being visible. You can geotag posts so that more people in this location may find it; tag potential organizations or partners involved in your industry like (your chamber of commerce); use hashtags that your ideal clients might be using on Instagram or LinkedIn. Doing any one these things will help make yourself stand out!

Social Selling Tip #2 – MONITORING

A social media marketing professional should also monitor his content by checking who has interacted with it, liking a post or comment under one of the posts they liked. For example, if someone shares your post on Facebook and you see that this person is potentially interested in what you are offering then reach out to them via Direct Message. Finally make sure to check private messages from other users as well because sometimes people will contact you privately about how much they enjoyed something and give feedback anonymously without creating an account but still want more information which could lead into another potential customer for your company!

Social Selling Tip #3 – INVESTIGATING

When you find out who’s liking, commenting, and sharing your content it can be time to investigate more about these customers. Check which big gurus they are following in the industry or get into groups that might help them on Facebook or Linkedin so that you know their needs better and what value you have for them.

When people take an interest in what we do online by interacting with our posts of links this gives us a chance to learn more about those users-their interests as well as how best we may benefit from getting involved within one of their communities.

Social Selling Tip #4  – OUTREACHING

The more you interact with and get to know someone, the easier it will be for that person to help out your business. When they share their wins on social media or a blog post of theirs, congratulate them! If they started following your account when you just opened up shop then send them our speaker kit in thanks for supporting us so early on. And if after interacting back and forth for a while there’s an opportunity where we can work together- don’t miss it!

Social selling is a great way to make your content visible in front of the right audience and doesn’t really depend on you posting new content.  That’s why it’s important for social sellers to personalize their messages when reaching out, as well as looking at people’s posts before they reach out or comment so that they can get a sense of what type of person someone is “in real life.”

I hope you’re all having a great day so far! If anyone has any tips they want to share with us about how best to communicate on social media, feel free to comment below or DM me. I will be here ready and waiting for your advice 🙂
