3 Ways To Get Over Your Fear Of Social Media

There is the fear to show up at a networking event when you don’t know anybody and there is the fear of showing up on the Internet when you look at your stupid phone wondering who’s gonna pop up to watch you talking at your phone.

Both fears are valid and real. But most importantly, they’re part of our human-ness…

What challenges do female entrepreneurs face on social media?

When we feel insecurities we can easily forget who we are, and why we do what we do as women entrepreneurs.

When we are insecure, we forget our words, we loose clarity and we limit our possibilities for growth on social media. We feel like a complete stranger. A fraud. And we become super good at generating excuses to delay our presence online.

When my website is finished, I will post…When I feel more this, I will start videos…when people know me better, I will…I’m really tired lately, it won’t be good for them to see me like this (this is my most used one, personally)

I remember my first video for a cooking video series I wanted to create on Facebook — about my love of avocado and the 18 ways you could eat it.

When came the time to hit the record button, I can still feel it as I’m typing these words, something strong inundated my inner belly…pure fear & cramp type of pains… fear of been judged for talking about avocado like it was the most important thing of the world. Who cares, right!?

I’m not even a chef anyway. I’m not a nutritionist. I’m not an expert. Who am I, anyway? BAM… Impostor Syndrome 110% pure ingredients.

One of my clients physically felt that gap and literally throw up before doing her first live video on Facebook (she was in her garden, luckily!). And she was – and still is – a successful and recognize business owner in Atlantic Canada. You could think, it would be no problem for her, she had already so much authority in her industry.

Who’s the boss?

Well, this is not how it works. Our thoughts seem to be the boss of uncontrolled reactions.

When we get to this place of insecurity, a mega giant GAP separates us from our very mission and we need to choose power over it.

As women in business, power is our jam. Otherwise we wouldn’t be here. (yes, it’s freakin’ hard to build a business…but as equal fun)

This is why every week I equip you with a FREE resource that you can download, a Facebook Live and a NEW YouTube tutorial.

How to overcome the fear of rejection

So what can we do to close that gap that is the exact opposite of the bond we’re trying to build with our online audience.

I’m sharing with you 3 ways to reconcile you inner insecurity when it comes to showing up online via images, videos or words.

  • Talk as if you were talking to your best friend.
  • Get ready to be ready
  • Twist the back mirror before driving the show

They are the same I used when I was a full time reporter for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation where every day I had to talk to thousands of people on TV.

#1 – Talk as if you were talking to your best friend.

For the first few years of my career as a journalist, I talked to my grand-ma when on TV at 6PM every evening. Currently, my tactic has slightly changed. I think of one of you – as my students. Maybe we had a discussion on that topic last week, and I make that video for YOU.

I fell in love with this tactic because it eliminates the white noise and the black hole that the Internet can represent to us, in our head. Who gonna see me??? Well I don’t care. I’m talk to Lisa today, anyway. I know for sure it will be useful to her, at least.

#2 – Get ready to be ready.

What do I mean by this? Because stress, anxiety and fear can cause lack of clarity, make sure you have your HARDCORE sentences ready.

What are you hardcore sentences?

Who you are and who you help.

Why you do what you do – your mission in other ways.

These hardcore sentences are use at the beginning or at the end of your educational video…or you can even repeat yourself. It’s all good. They’re your walking sticks, basically.

If you record an education video, make sure you limit yourself to 3 points of teaching so that you don’t feel overwhelmed and they don’t either. Keep it short. Don’t say ALL what you know… Just crumbles that are so helpful for your audience to implement right away.

If you listen to some of my videos, you will probably hear this as follows:

My name is Angélique Binet, the Founder of Social Media Love and I help 6-figure women entrepreneurs unleash their inner rockstar online and grow their company with paid traffic on social media.

Not matter what happens during the video, this is who I am…even on the day my video sucks, or I feel off…I promise you it will give you a sense of control and power.

Now, for my mission. I have a few versions on paper. But here’s the one you will hear most often.

I am on a mission to spiral the number of women entrepreneurs who want to share their message with millions online and monetize it. Why it is my mission?  I believe that women leaders currently have a historical advantage to take control of their influence thanks to digital platforms where gender equity, skin colour, cultural background have no boundary any more. The Internet is yours until you loose the connection.

#3 – Twist the back mirror before driving the show

Make sure you don’t see your face in it. Showing up online is not about you. Repeat this. It is not about you. When I share my story on social media, when I teach a topic on social media, when I showcase my products on social media, it is for the good of my audience. You want your audience to recognize themselves in your content.

When women entrepreneurs first started their journey in the business world it was because they noticed this gift they had to help others in what they love to do the most depending on their field of expertise.

I personally started with helping my entrepreneur friends with building their online clientele in exchange of fresh organic apples because it was so easy for me to play with social media marketing and make others make money.

Show up, impact lives and make money

You also have this power to help others make money or health or whatever transformation they’re looking for… and this is probably why you started your business after realizing that this gift and passion you have can impact so many more people for good and you can make money out of it. Money that feels good.

So my third tip is about cultivating that belief that when you show up online, even when there is nobody watching, or even if you get negative messages here and there, you can be assured that there is at least ONE person you’re saving that day, you’re giving hope to, even if that person doesn’t like or comment or share your video.

I have many proofs of that. The story I love to share is the one with my avocado video series. I did it…and I even used a drawing note book to illustrate my teaching online (note that I don’t know how to draw)…Nobody saw it, I thought. Then the next Sunday while grocery shopping someone stopped me and said hey! you’re the one who eats avocado with chocolate!!! I was floored…

So my friends…no matter how big or small your audience is right now. People are watching and that ONE person who really needs your help is literally looking for you online as you read this article.

So, will you show up today?

Let me know how it goes for you in the comment section down below.
